Tina Shanahan has over 25 years of experience in the health care arena.  She is a Registered Nurse and a Captain in the U.S. Navy Reserves.  She served almost a decade on Capitol Hill, both as Staff Director of the U.S. House Subcommittee on Hospitals and Health Care and as a Professional Staff Member of the U.S. House Committee on Veterans Affairs from March 1989 to July 1994.  She held additional positions in the U.S. Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs and as a national advocate on behalf of Paralyzed Veterans of America. Ms. Shanahan joined Blue Cross/Blue Shield of North Carolina in December 1994 as Director of Public Policy & Regulatory Affairs and has held a number of senior health policy and strategic positions with BCBSNC.  She left BCBSNC in June 2006 to become President and CEO of Be Active North Carolina, a statewide non-profit that promotes physical activity and healthy lifestyles.  She worked with Be Active NC until she was recalled to active duty in 2007. 

 

Ms. Shanahan has served over 20 years in the U.S. Navy Reserves and has been called to active duty on a number of occasions.  She has extensive knowledge of health care policy and strategic planning, including military and civilian health care systems, non-profit management and health payer systems. 

 

Ms. Shanahan is a graduate of the Alexandria Hospital School of Nursing in Alexandria, VA and the Columbia University School of Nursing in New York City.  She holds a Master of Health Care Administration from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill School of Public Health.  In addition to numerous military awards, she is the recipient of the Triangle Business Journal’s outstanding “Women in Business” award.  She resides in Raleigh, N.C. and is a nationally ranked equestrian athlete.
